Florida Players

I'm just throwing this out for consideration to all shakuhachi players in and around Florida.

Is anyone interested in getting together, maybe once or twice a year, to practice and exchange knowledge?

I haven't had any luck finding a teacher nearby. I know that there's a teacher at FSU, but he hasn't responded to my email. I also believe that another teacher was relocating to South Florida.

It might be interesting to get together in Orlando or maybe one of the state parks for a day.

Let me know if there's any interest and we can start planning for the Fall.

Thank you.

Re: Florida Players

pstl,
I'm not in Florida, but I think I may be the only one in Georgia who plays (attempts anyway). I may be interested. If you don't have any interest in FL, maybe we could meet somewhere between here and there, or you could probably tempt me to go to FL (especially near a beach).

Re: Florida Players

Thanks Damon. Let's wait and see if there are others in the Southeast that are interested.

I'm hoping that this could be the start of an annual Southeast regional meeting of players and teachers.

I think there are at least 5 or 6 of us down here in the Southeast.

Re: Florida Players

Hey Phillip - sounds like a great idea; keep me posted. I know several other players here in So. Fla. who might also be interested; I'll mention it to them.

Re: Florida Players

i started playing shakuhachi while in College in Florida in the late 80's. My parents live in Broward County and i return once or twice a year to visit them; sometimes performing and giving lessons as well

Re: Florida Players

Cool! Maybe we can all schedule around Phil's visits as event dates.

The trick will be meeting in a location that's somewhat convenient for all. We also need to keep the event as inexpensive as possible. There's no sense in putting it out of reach for those who would like to attend, but can't make or afford the journey.

We could wait and see how many respond to this post and then go offline via emails to coordinate.

I'm truly excited about the possibility of learning and sharing the experience.

Thank you.

Re: Florida Players

Hi to all!

Though I've played in total solitude (so to speak) for decades, I just thought I'd chime in here.  I just joined this forum the other day.

Philip, do you remember meeting me at the Rosendale Cafe while I lived in Woodstock?... say around '95 or so?  I really enjoyed that.  Unfortunately, that cafe was pretty noisy!

Anyway, I live centrally to all of you, AND I'm near the beaches where I regularly surf.  This is Brevard County, Florida's "Space Coast."

I think a Florida get-together sounds like a good idea.  I know there's much I could learn through such an encounter... so let's consider it seriously!

Re: Florida Players

The perfect place to meet might be Gainesville. It's pretty close to central Florida, but within reach by those in Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. This makes me wonder if there are any players in Alabama or Mississippi. I haven't seen any in the forum. Hmm!

I notice that Philip has performed there in the past, so Philip, you might work up a show for the evening.

Also, it being a college town, we might find a pretty cool facility to meet in, if we work through the UF music department. We might even introduce some students to the shakuhachi.

Any chance we can try to do this in October, November, or December?

I can do any one of those months.

regards.

Re: Florida Players

Hi Philip and all,

That was great to meet you back then, Philip.  Remember the really small flutes I had with me?  That bamboo came from a place in Lakewood, NJ called Bamboo and Rattan.  They'd bought the stuff for shakuhachi makers, and even though I bought some, it was really too small.  But hey, three of the pieces on my CD Illuminated From Within are done with those little flutes, and they basically sounded pretty good, I think.

Southeastern players:  if Gainesville is the ideal location for a Southeastern happening, that's fine by me.  I haven't been to G-ville in a long time, and I'm kind of Jonesin' to go there.  ...just thought I'd cast a positive vote for the suggestion to meet there...

Re: Florida Players

Hmm, I thought I had written a post to this thread last week in response to Philip Gelb's post, but I guess it evaporated into the ether somewhere.
I had just gotten home from a surprise lesson with Brian Tairaku, who had just come to town for the weekend and contacted me to see if I would be interested in a lesson (like I would say no?). I had a great time trying to relearn some long lost techniques (thank you once again Tairaku sensei). I also had a chance to see him play one of those huge Taimu's that he so loves (and is built to play). The sound is incredible! He even let me 'attempt' to play this monster - even though it was only a 2.6 - I was almost able to get a very feeble RI out of the thing. The hole spacings are just too far apart for my hands.
I also was fortunate enough to meet Philip Gelb here in Atlanta about 6 years ago when he performed here in town. I don't know if you remember me Philip. I was wondering if you have any plans to get back into this corner of the globe anytime in the future? There seems to be some kind of shakuhachi vaccuum here in "the ATL".
I would be very interested in making an excursion to Gainsville to play with y'all (yes, the yankee said y'all). Please keep me in the loop. Would love to play along with other shakuhachi.

Re: Florida Players

I think that a meeting in Gainesville would be EXCELLENT!!!! I have had such a dearth of shakuhachi players here in Florida that I thought I was the only one, and now I see there are others.

I am also down with the suggestion of October, November or December for the get together. These are "winter" months here and the weather is usually very mild.

Let's keep thinking of it  and maybe it will happen. (I hope, I hope, I hope)

Namaste ya'll

Re: Florida Players

Thanks Damon, that was a good lesson for me too. I enjoy teaching the far flung people who have no teacher at hand. It's an honor. I hope Phil goes down there and does a workshop for all the people in that area.

Re: Florida Players

Here's another FL player (I am in Gainesville), though I am without a shakuhachi since my son irreparably broke mine.  It was a cheap P.O.S. anyhow (and by cheap, I mean $20!!!).  It is laugable, because (and I can prove it), he is not yet 2 years old, his name is Ronin, and he was wearing a basket on his head when he did it!!!  But, I am saving up for a new one...

Has anyone here gone to visit Veronza Bowers?  If you don't know what I am taking about, he's an incarcerated Black Panther in the Fed. Pen. in Coleman.  He's a shakuhachi Master. You can read about him here: http://www.veronza.org/  He was found guilty, but as a former Public Defender, I can say this:  I am fairly certain that his trial was botched and he was found guilty despite being factually innocent.  That he's been locked up for almost 32 years, has served his sentence in full, and is denied release or parole, is tragic and unjust.

I am eager to find a local instructor once I get my hot little hands on a new shakuhachi.

My Son Jet likes to walk through my shop looking for a interesting stuff to get into (it's child proof). He often picks up a blank root end and points it at me as if he's fencing. He's 30 months old.

Here is a shot of him playing Seiza style on a fully bound 1.8. I don't have to worry about him cracking this one! Unless he breaks the joint.
Sasa, on the other hand, takes after her mom with the arched modern dance back bend.
