Help needed: smelly flute

A nice older instrument of mine has begun to exhibit a smell from the blowing end.

Might be mold, might be some food residue...not sure.

Any advice on how to tackle this?

Anyone have experience overcoming or not overcoming such a problem?

I already tried some tea tree oil in the bore but when the smell of the tea tree oil faded the musky odor returned.

Much thanks in advance.

Re: Help needed: smelly flute

Are you using the infamous "dampit in a plastic bag" method of storing your flute? If so it's probably mold.

Re: Help needed: smelly flute

I always keep a small bag of Zuko (Powdered incense) in my flute bag. It worked perfect for me all the time.

Re: Help needed: smelly flute

Tairaku -

No - No dampit in the bag.   I am from the school that holds that a practice session a day is enough moisture for the shakuhachi.

(Ralph Samuelson has a compromise approach - he puts the shakuhachi in a plastic bag, and places it in another secondary plastic bag.  He then places a dampit in the second bag.  This way the shakuhachi is in a moist environment, but the dampit is never up against the flute itself.  He claims he has not had a shakuhachi crack in 30 years.)

Gishin-

Incense is a good idea.  If all else fails I will go with that.

Re: Help needed: smelly flute

Sometimes I burn incense and hold the flute over the smoke.

Re: Help needed: smelly flute

I recommend washing the area a few times with a mild solution of Clorox bleach (say, 2-3 tablespoons in two cups of water).

You can use an old toothbrush to do a gentla scrub, the rinse it off well and dry with a paper towel or soft cloth. Repeat a few
times over the next week or so, and you probably won't have to do it again, if ever, for a very long time.

I think the incense is a good idea too, but it won't really do much for the cause, whatever it is.

It's also quite possible to wrap your flute in only ONE plastic bag and apply humidity as well using a small chunk of
plastic dishwashing sponge instead of a dampit:

Wet the piece of sponge so it's damp, but not dripping. Slip the flute into the bag blowing end in first.

Place the sponge into the bag so it's NOT touching the flute and loosely fold over the end of the bag and fasten with a rubber band.

Perry Yung has an illustrated tutorial of this on the Forum somewhere, and I've been doing it for 15 years with very good results (at
least, no BAD results).

Re: Help needed: smelly flute

You know how the forum has little advertisements which are triggered by whatever catch phrases are in the text? Well this is what your question prompted:

Urine-Off
Urine odour & stain remover - no matter how old or how bad it smells

And:

Nok-Out removes bad odors
pets, tobacco smoke, mold, mildew no odor too terrible for Nok-Out.

Maybe you should check them out! wink

You could also move to Virginia. The humidity here never drops below 60% and my flutes do just great out and about the house..... and with that said one is bound to explode tonight.

Re: Help needed: smelly flute

I had mold in the bore of a jinashi flute.  I think it was caused by food particles more than excessive humidity in storage.  I swabbed it out with Lysol and have had no further problems.

Re: Help needed: smelly flute

By the way:

Here is Perry's demonstration of properly bagging a shakuhachi for maintaining a humid environment:

I'm a little confused.  Are you suggesting Femanol might be able to resolve the smell / mold issues in my shakuhachi?

I guess it is worth a shot...

Re: Help needed: smelly flute

I think that would depend upon where you store your flute! yikes
