Brown rings under the nodes.

Another question:

When drying the bamboo some of them shows a brown ring below the nodes, and I don't know what I need to do to make them disappear. Some times they go away, sometimes doesn't.. I already try to put the bamboo more or less away from the electric burner, tried also to use ember of wood... I'ts a tendency that after some years in drying process they will go disappear? I ask this beacause I have some pieces drying about a year and a half and I am still noticing that kind of brown rings.

Any tip?

Again, thank you all...

Peace.

Re: Brown rings under the nodes.

The brown ring you speak of can be one of two things.  Sometimes the oils and resins combined with dirt will become somewhat black and hard during aburanuki at the node.  This can be removed by carefully brushing or vigorous rubbing with a cloth at the time of aburanuki.  You can also scrape it with you fingernail.  If the colour is a lighter brown colour, it is caused by the same process that causes 'fu' or the mottling colouration of the bamboo which is usually desirable.  This generally can't be removed and is often considered a good thing.
Hope that helps.
