Essential Oils and Dampit

Expensive delicate instrument experiment #1.

I live in Ontario. It is incredibly dry currently. I try to play once a day. Everytime I open the tube, open the fabric bag, open the plastic bag i'm afraid that my flute has cracked.

As such, i'm going to buy a Dampit. I've heard good, i've heard bad, i've heard indifferent. I figure worst case scenario, it'll look like a tropical rainforest and smell like a soggy ham sandwich or that bag of oranges i've been meaning to throw out or pass off as brownies to unsuspecting friends.

I'm going to add a drop of Thieves Essential Oil to the Dampit and see what does (or does not) happen. It's anti-fungal on surface contact as well as vapors.

Can anyone think of a reason why this could be a bad idea?

Just make sure you don't get the oil on the blowing edge !

I did and because it was such a strong oil, it burnt my lips and affected my blowing for a month.

Not a bad idea, but I recommend skipping the dampit (which puts moisture down INTO the bore; it's only required in the atmosphere of the plastic storage bag, or other somewhat sealed enclosure) and doing this:

I also believe that IF you play at least once a day, and keep your flute in the poly bag, you should have no problems, no matter how dry
it is in your area. IF.

As Ed mentioned if you play it daily, a lot of breath moisture and body oils from the hands and face goes into the flute. After playing and using the Tsyutoshi cloth, I usually blow four or five warm breaths into the plastic bag before  sealing it with a rubber band. I've never used a Dampit. A 50 - 55% humidity level is good for storage.

Best, Perry
