Shunpukan Dojo in process

Here are pics of the Dojo that we are building.

I will try to post new ones on a weekly basis. You can see me on the pics and also Denis Paquette on of my students. He is the main contributor to the Dojo by donating a large part of the materials and also his time and expertise and making it all happen.

Re: Shunpukan Dojo in process

Ok here are the latest updates.

We finished working last night at 19:30 PM. The work done last week went like this.

Monday: Apply the grout on the floor and patch the holes and imperfections in the wall. Then we went to go get the wood,  this was also time consuming since we had to hand select each pieces and calculate a lot so that we could save some money without compromising the ned product. What was also a bugger is that we had to select types of lumber that would need as less modifications as possible to be within Japanese standards lumbers shape size etc.

Tuesday: Final calculation and planning then we attacked the main tokonoma which is goint to be used as the main altar.

Wednesday: More shopping for wood and work on the structure of the main altar.

Thursday: We finished the structure of the main altar. Now all the is needed is apply the wood covering stain adn varnish to it. Here is a picture of the finished structure. The central panel is a hidden door that leads to a storage space.

So basically next week what needs to be done is the wood ceiling, side walls beams and jointery and thesmaller tokonoma in the back. From the input of denis all should be finished including applying stain and varnish by Friday. All the will be left at that time will be small details.

Re: Shunpukan Dojo in process

So now we just finished applying the stain on all the wood work and will let it dry all night then in the morning we will apply a light coat of non glossy varnish to seal it all off. Afterwards we will be moving on to the wood work that goes on the ceiling. The las part which should be done next week will inculde a fresh coat of white primer all over the walls with a sand finsih paint that will be covered in light tea green to simulate a nice Juraku type of finish.

Here are the latest pics.

Re: Shunpukan Dojo in process

So here we are. All the beams on the wall have been done and the frame of the ceiling has also been applied. We had also some time to put 3 coats of luster free varnish on all that wood. Now what need to be done os cover the chip boards with real wood, apply the square maple boards on the ceiling to cover it then all that would be left is the painting job. so we are pretty optimistic that all will be done by the end of next week.

Here are the latest pics of the job.

Re: Shunpukan Dojo in process

Ok here we are with a finished Dojo. All that is left is to put the small doors at the bottom of the main altar (Still waitng for the door handles to come from Japan so this is why they are not put in yet) and install the hanging lamp instead to the standard light bulb. But all in all I am glad to say that it is finished all the furniture has been put in and little by little I will populate the top of the walls with framse etc that I have.

So here are the final pictures of the whole thing.

Re: Shunpukan Dojo in process

Thank you for the kind words Kiku!

It is a small basement dojo but it does fill a void in the region since there was no Suizen dojo previous to this one. I hope that this will motivate others in the region to create something bigger than mine so that more people can be introduced to Shakuhachi and Japanese culture.

Re: Shunpukan Dojo in process

Job well done Gishin.

There are many "shakuhachi dojos" around but this one really LOOKS like a shakuhachi dojo!
