While it has always been popular with attendees over the years, the organizers and faculty have made two big changes in this year's Shakuhachi Summer Camp of the Rockies program which we are confident will make it more inspiring, more enjoyable, and more productive than ever.
For anyone who has been playing the shakuhachi, studying and playing modern and/or classical material, and who wants to take their shakuhachi experience to the next level, this camp is for you! Our goal is no less than to make your Shakucamp experience the most valuable 5 days you will spend with the shakuhachi this year. In addition to the establishment of a new "Shakuhachi Summer Camp of the Rockies Beginner Curriculum," the intermediate and advanced curriculum for this year will be leaner, meaner and deeper than ever before.
In order to make Shakucamp even more beneficial to intermediate and advanced students (both repeat attendees and newcomers), we are reducing the number of class offerings (thus instantly reducing "missed chance frustration') and focussing more closely on providing complete and thorough coverage of what is offered.
This year, for the first time, you can start your camp experience months before arriving at Sunrise Ranch. Camp registrants will be given access to a private page on the Shakucamp website where the daily schedule and sheet music files of all of the teaching materials and pieces offered at camp can be browsed, perused, and downloaded at will. Audio files will also be made available for musical reference.
While the number of offerings will be less than in camps past, the variety of genre and style will remain the same, if not increase. In addition to the standard classical Honkyoku (Zen solos) and Sankyoku (shamisen/koto/shakuhachi), and modern solos and ensembles, faculty will teach their own compositions and modern commissions.
Finally, for one period each day, ALL camp participants, from beginner to advanced, join together for lectures and instruction on some core facet of the Shakuhachi: repertoire, technique, theory, philosophy, history, lore and more.
