Hi Jeff, Here's a shot in the dark, as the time period appears to be incongruent, judging from the color of the bamboo above.
But for what it's worth, you'll see the name Kyodou in the first paragraph:

Hope you're well,

Hi Marc,
I found that paper on the web, but I'm quite sure that isn't the same person. I suspect that this flute was made or repaired within the last 15 years. The shakuhachi in question is a very beat up 1.9 that has been repaired by probably two people, or at two different times. It has a wonderful tone and a big expressive field. Here's a picture of the flute.

Jeff --
I have 2 flutes with that mark. I received the 1.9 as a gift from Yoshinobu Tanaguchi in Japan several years agao, and it was a new flute then. Perry Yung in NYC brought the other, a 2.0, from Japan and sold it to me, since I had asked him to help discover the maker of the 1.9.
I'd suspect either of them might be able to help you with more info about Kyodo/Kyoduo, especially Yoshinobu Tanaguchi -- he seemed to know the maker and gave the impression the flute was from the Kansai area in Japan.
Good luck --

The teachers in my branch of Kinko all take their shakuhachi name from iemoto Fuji Jidou so the second character in their name is the same as the second kanji on your flute. It could be that the maker is a member of Chikudosha but then again most Chikudosah players are in the Kanto area so there may be no connection.

I think I recall Chikuzen Sensei mentioning this maker to me at one point. You might ask him as well.

Thanks James. I'll check with him after the festival.

Hi Jeff, I Just got back from playing shakuhachi at a wedding on a beach in Mexico and saw your posting.
I've had the pleasure of playing three flutes made by Kyodou. All three were in the intermediate to professional range. They were all fine crafted instruments. From what I was told. Kyodo produced shakuhachi in or around Kyoto and abruptly closed shop around 10 years ago. He released his inventory to one individual. Perhaps that individual is Tanaguchi?
Are you going to work on it?
Best of luck with it, Perry

Thanks Perry, I will try to get a hold of Taniguchi-san. Does anybody out there have his e-mail address?
If I do anything to the intsrument, it would be to change some of the bindings and work a bit on the bigger cracks. Fortunately, the bore is in good shape.
thanks.

Chikuzen will have it. Check with him when he gets back from Oz.

Taniguchi sensei doesn't do email. Jeff, I think I got that flute from Peter Ross, who may have gotten it from Chikuzen, who may have gotten it from Taniguchi.

Thanks Brian. I didn't want to bother you during the festival with this and I remember you telling me something like that when you sent it to me. I appreciate the lead. And, also thanks for the festival run-down. I'm looking forward to Kyoto in 2012.
