Refining bamboo

I was wondering if when sanding/polishing a shakuhachi, it is common to sand the outer part of  a node, so as to make the node not stick out as much? I hope this makes sense....

Hi Sean,

I've seen and done this on shakuhachi with the skin sanded off. It's an easier job taking the skin off if the nodes are sanded as well. I also find it interesting aesthetically. I haven't noticed it as often on un-skinned shakuhachi

Hey Sean, Here's a very old flute that has the skin sanded off on the exterior. You can see where the node is.  I collected it in Kyoto about 6 years ago.

It has a natural patina but also has a coat of some kind of lacquer.

Good luck! Perry

Re: Refining bamboo

Thanks Ken and Perry for your insights, I might venture into sanding the nodes, I'm just concerned as to the overall balance of the flute.... I don't want to sand the entire flute because the polishing was

beautifully done.
