Peter Hill teaching classes and lessons in LA, 8/16 & 8/17.

Peter Hill will be in LA the weekend of August 16 & 17.  He will teach a group class on embrochure and the production of meri notes (classes he offered in Sydney), teach private lessons, and give a talk on antique and classic shakuhachi.

The main events will be at Pomona College on Saturday, with a few lesson slots available in Marina del Rey on Sunday.

Saturday will start with a one-hour group class on embrochure and the production of meri notes.  That class will start at 9:30.

The group class will be followed by individual lessons.

In addition to the lessons, Peter is bringing a few flutes along for people to look at and play.  I will have a collection of kimonos and some flutes from Masa Yoshizawa's collection - a few shakuhachi and a variety of yokobue - to offer to folks.

After the individual lessons we will break for dinner.  And after dinner, time permitting, Peter will give a talk on antique and classic shakuhachi.  Peter has been buying and selling flutes for more than 20 years and has a lot of experience with used and antique instruments so the talk promises to be both interesting and informative.

The cost of the group class and a one-hour lesson is $80.  For those who are not interested in both, individual lessons are $60 and the group class is $25.

No charge for the talk on antique and classical shakuhachi.  Guests welcome.

Interested parties should contact me at bjones@ucsd.edu to schedule lessons and for further information.

Re: Peter Hill teaching classes and lessons in LA, 8/16 & 8/17.

Lesson slots for Saturday in Pomona are full.  There are still one or two slots available for Sunday in Marina del Rey.

There is still room in the group class on Saturday morning.  That class, more fully detailed below, starts at 9:30.
To reserve a spot, send an email response to this post.

Directions to Pomona College and the building to follow later this week.

Here's Peter's description of the class and the talk Saturday evening.

TThe group class will focus on two of the main elements of playing
shakuhachi honkyoku: making a good sound, and playing meri notes
deeply enough and with good tone. The first involves correct breathing,
breath control, and embouchure, and all of these will be taught. The
playing of meri notes is not well understand by many even after years
of playing, so Peter will pass on the lesser-known elements of playing
nice meri notes.  He has helped many player's achieve a very noticeable
improvement in their sound and meri notes in just one lesson.  If time
permits, he will work with participants on the other main element of
shakuhachi honkyoku, *ma* (space).

The talk and demonstration on antique shakuhachi will be about numerous
ways they compare to and contrast with modern shakuhachi, and explores
some reasons why one would chose either a modern shakuhachi or a vintage
(pre-WWII) shakuhachi over the other.
