Komuso in movies

It would be fun to put a list of Japanese movies in which we see and hear soem Komuso play.

I know of a few and I am sure others can contribte to the list.

Kozure Okami TV series with Nakamura Kinnosuke : I remember Kurahashi Sensei say  that his father played Shakuhachi in one of those episodes but I could be wrong maybe it was the movies with Wakayama Tomisaburo.

Yagyu Ichizoku no inbo: With Toshiro Mifune

Daibosatsu Toge with Mifune and Nakadai

Daibosatsu Toge 3 Movie set with Ichikawa Raizo

Now for the two Daibosatsu Toge version there is a webpage that says Takahashi Kuzan was playing Koku in the Mifune version but I did not hear or see anything in there.

I suspect it was in the previous version with Ichikawa Raizo.

So lets see how many movies we can come up with.

Re: Komuso in movies

Do any of these have voice over translation or subtitles?  Can't understand Japanese.

Re: Komuso in movies

I've learned in recent years not to bet the house on my long term memory, but I seem to recall that Kenji Mizoguchi’s 47 Ronin Part 2 has a brief appearance by a shakuhachi player who's tooting down a village street wearing a shallow, wide-rimmed straw hat, possibly a variation of the better known "basket" style tengai.

Mastery does not lay in the mastery of technique, but in penetrating the heart of the music. However, he who has not mastered the technique will not penetrate the heart of the music.

Yes I think I remember. In this scene the ronins are having a meeting and suddenly when they hear him play the flute they say we should shut up or something thinking the Komuso migh tbe a spy.

Ugetsu:

When the potter is in the town there is a brief sighting of a komuso wandering the streets playing his shakuhachi.

The Yakuza:

When Robert Mitchum goes to the home of the retired Yakuza (and kendo master) to request the return of his favor, there is a kamuso wandering in his courtyard garden playing shakuhachi.
