Seven hole shakuhachi

Where the extra holes should be drilled?

After they are made, can we use the spot tuning over them? And if we are working specifically on a jiari, a good bore profile for a standard flute will work for a seven hole shakuhachi?

Thanks to all, again!

Re: Seven hole shakuhachi

Hi Musgo da Pedre,
If you go to this page on my website http://www.windwheel.com/frames/shakset.htm and click on the 'shakuhachi for sale' link then click on the Senzan 2.0, 7 hole, you can see pictures that show one method of placing holes for a seven hole flute.  I'm afraid that I don't have information about any possible differences in bore configuration.  Just a visual reference.

Re: Seven hole shakuhachi

The bore does not need any alteration from a standard 5 hole instrument.

Re: Seven hole shakuhachi

Hi Jeff!

I looked the pics of the Senzan. I understand where, lets say, beetween which holes and the off-line configuration...

I would like to know for exemple, on a 1.8, the distance fromof the flute to the 1st small hole and to the 2nd small hole between holes 3 and 4.

On Senzan pictures they have a diameter, that is something like 1/4" (1st) and 5/16" (2nd)???

Re: Seven hole shakuhachi

Hola Henrique,

Here is a link to my blog entry where I converted an old 5-hole to a 7hole. http://www.yungflutes.com/log/archives/ … g_a_s.html

There are also a few threads here on the Forum about 7-hole shakuhachi in case you didn't see them yet:

Basically, just drill a small 3mm - 4mm hole where your lower hand pinky finger would feel comfortable at when playing. A small hole will allow you room to enlarge and sharpen for pitch. On Jiari flutes, the hole size is quite small so that it can be higher up for an easier reach. The hole is drilled angled down towards the bottom of the flute because the bamboo wall is very thick there (the proper hole placement would be lower). If you have thin walled bamboo, you do not have to factor this in in for pitch.

Each flute has to be tuned according to the taste of the maker. A standard Jiari may not require any bore work but you can decide if any adjustments need to be made after the holes are drilled. Spot tuning is only one technique for a maker to achieve desired results. A new Tsu Meri hole  may affect Tsu and Ro becasue it is near the Choke point - a very critical part of the bore that influences these two very important notes (for traditional players). Do you have a YUU you can experiment on?

This photo may help for the Ri Meri hole. It is smaller then #3 and #4.

Here is the sound file from this the flute playing the five hole scale first and then the seven-hole scale.

Re: Seven hole shakuhachi

Muchas gracias Perry...

I don't have a Yuu, but, I'm a lucky guy who lives in the city that have the largestt bamboo forest in my state.  Even being summer here, I am picking some boos and walking through the forest searching some pieces that dropped naturally (and that have desired qualities) to make some tests and playable flutes!!!

You can be sure that I'm enjoying it and having fun... shakuhachi world made a lot of changes in my life style, and I'm very happy with them...even when  some troubles appear...

A big hug to you all guys!
