Friendly hello from British Columbia.

Hi all;

I am very interested in this Shakuhachi.  I have been listening to recordings for a few years.  I have all of Riley Lee's recordings, Satori is my favorite.  The other day I was on the Ferry boat and I ran into a fellow who was playing.  He asked me if I played, and I said no, but I thought, I might as well get one and try.

I am very interested in the Shakuhachi in terms of meditation.  It's too bad the forum on zen is not operational any longer, but there seem to be some great resourses here.  I want to thank all of you for making this available.  I can tell from a mile away that there is a great community here. Call it a Sangha if you will. wink

Anyoo, I'll need to solicite some advice on how to get my hands on an instrument. I played the didgeridoo for many years and I was always partial to PVC, even though I tried some really great authentic Didg's PVC was always my favorite.  I think I will be very happy if I can get a PVC Shakuhachi to start.  I'd appreciate any advice on getting a good PVC.

Thanks in advance, and nice to meet you,
Mike.

Re: Friendly hello from British Columbia.

Hi double Mike, welcome to the forum!

Where abouts in BC are you?  We are fortunate to have an outstanding shakuhachi teacher in BC:  Alcvin Ramos's site can be found here: http://www.bamboo-in.com/about-us/ryuzen.htm

Alcvin also has some very nice PVC shakuhachi for sale.

cheers,
Erin

Re: Friendly hello from British Columbia.

Hi Mike
I recommend the "Yuu" shakuhachi. It's great for beginners. I think Michael might sell them through his website?
http://www.chikuzenstudios.com/

Otherwise a search on the net will find them or someone here can tell you. They are in tune and good for lessons, and quite durable.

I miss the Zen forums too, as I came to shakuhachi through Buddhism. Feel free to mail me privately if you wish.

Warm welcome to you
Justin

Re: Friendly hello from British Columbia.

Michael doesn't sell Yuus, but here's a place that does, and apparently one can get a free online lesson with Michael
when buying a Yuu there:

Hey Mike, Welcome to the forum!

If you are yearning for a PVC shakuhachi, you can make your own with just a few tools - hack saw, and drill  (+3/8" bit), measuring tape and two files (rough and fine) is all you need.

Of course, you'll also need the plans - http://www.fides.dti.ne.jp/~sogawa/englishpagepvc.html

Enjoy! Perry

Ken Lacosse of Mujitsu Shakuhachi makes a fine PVC shakuhachi for $50. Here is a link:

...and I might add, if you are in Vancouver, Banyen Books,  on 4th Avenue near Alma, sells the Yuu as well.

Re: Friendly hello from British Columbia.

Hi again;

Thanks very much for all the kind words + it's very nice to meet you all.  I decided to go with the majority and ordered the Shakuhachi Yuu.  I got a nifty adapter with it also that turns it into something like a chanter so that I can get a good start working on the fingering and not worry about the lip position.

Very exciting though + I'll move to the other forums on the board when it arrives and ask advice, and whatnot.  Bye for now.

MM.
