Hi Geni --
Besides the great variety of hocchiku and home-made shakuhachi, there are two main styles of "professional" flutes: Kinko and Tozan. The only differences are the shape of the utaguchi (blowing edge) and the size of the third hole (slightly smaller on a Kinko flute). In practice these generic differences are much less significant than the differences between individual flutes. Anything you can play on a Kinko flute you can play on a Tozan flute and vice versa. When getting a new flute, listen for what the individual flute sounds like rather than worrying about Kinko v. Tozan.
