Zen Garage with Perry Yung

Hi all,

I just wanted to offer a sample of an upcoming CD I recorded with my friend Tony Silva and his friend Jonathan Keezing in Northampton, MA in late July 2008.  I had been working with Tony on Lec/dems and performances around the Five College area for about a year and a half.  When Tony learned that I was relocating back to New York City, he set up a recording session to document our musical relationship.  He invited his harpist friend Jonathan to the recording session.

The three of us improvised for about four hours to come up with the music for the CD (I had six of my own shakuhachi in front of me - 1.6 Chikusing, 1.8 Chikusing, 1.8 YUNG , 2.4 Hocchiku with urushi,  2.8 Chikusing and 3.0 hocchiku). I had just met Jonathan shortly before the record button was pressed. The only rule was, Do not be afraid of silence.  During the jam, I was constantly impressed with how Jonathan could transpose on the fly.

This is not a polished, commercial recording. The 12 tracks were originally culled from one long recording session of total improvisation.  But in the final mix, we decided to added a track from the second recording day. This music was truly in the moment. It will never happen again.
