This summer will be the 26th Lark World Music Camp, held in the beautiful mendocino redwoods in Northern California. For the fourth consecutive year i will be teaching shakuhachi at the camp. This is an amazing 9 day camp where you can take as many classes as you like on a variety of instruments and countless styles. Concerts and informal sessions every night, all night.

Having just experienced Phil's music and teaching firsthand in Claremont last weekend, I can only hope that as many people as possible take the opportunity to go to Lark Camp this July 28-August 5 to study with him.
Phil's teaching style is generous, perceptive, immediately relevant and skillful. I think you'll also find that the purity, skill and subtlety of his playing establishes a kind of 'natural authority' as a teacher. (I'm trying to twist his arm to make a CD of honkyoku.)
He's also a helluva vegetarian chef, but that's another post for another time. --c.

(... and he also turned me on to Steve Lacy's music.)

Okay, someone emailed me and said this mini-review/recommendation sounded just TOO good, maybe even pollyanna-ish, so here's one negative thing i can say about Phil:
He doesn't wear socks when he plays.
Okay? Fair and balanced reportage only.
