Hi... I am going to get a few recordings, and I saw a recording called Makoto-Shinjitsu by "Nyogetsu Seldin". Any thoughts on this recording? Or, is there a place here where there are recommendations on good recordings? I am interested in solo shakuhaci playing for meditation purposes. Thanks.

Hi Phil!
Makoto Shinjitsu is the follow-up to Ichi On Buttsu. I have both and enjoy them both. Rather than offend other forum members by neglecting to mention them, I will, instead, refer you to a section on this forum called (surprise!) 'Reviews'. That would be an excellent place to start, and I'm sure other members will chime in with their favorites/recommendations.
later...

You could try looking at the list of pros moderating this forum and do searches for their names on myspace, youtube, and amazon. Many have samples of their music on those sites. I haven't heard the particular recording of Nyogetsu that you mention, but I know he has several solo honkyoku recordings. If that's what the recording you mention is I'm pretty sure you'd like it since honkyoku is solo shakuhachi for meditation.

Hi Phllipsych,
I can suggest a couple of CD's you would like, and they are also educational in a sense, as they give you an introduction to honkyoku of different traditions.
The first one is a double CD by Stan Richardson. It is good value, and well done. Lots of songs for a good price (you can always find it for cheap on ebay)
Shakuhachi meditation music.
Disk 1:
1. Kyorei (empy bell)
2. Choshi or Shirabe
3. Koku (empy sky)
4. Muasaki Reibo
5. Sashi (Buddha or Satsu)
6. Yoshi Ya
7. Sanya (three valleys)
Disk 2:
1. Akita Sugagaki (reed fence)
2. Shin Kyorei
3. Tsuru No Sugomori (you will love this one!!)
4. Shika no Tone
5. Tamuke (offering)
6. Matsukaze
The other CDs I think you might like are The Art of Shakuhachi vol 1 and 2. I don't have the song list handy, but this guy is good. The sound is clean and pure, though at times a little cold and lonley in spirit. Still, very moving stuff and worth having for sure.
Hope that helps a little bit, one newb to another

The iTunes Store now has a pretty substantial shakuhachi inventory.
Put 'shakuhachi' in the Search window.
