In Vietnam, there is a proverb: "The living need light and the dead need music." This genre of music is unique to Vietnam's Buddhist tradition and funeral rites. But some say it's on the way out, a victim of economic modernization. NPR's Michael Sullivan reports.

Great post, thanks. Michael Sullivan is a first rate reporter, and is doing a fine series on Vietnam and SE Asia.

"Very few people are able or willing to play the music properly."

That I feel is somewhat relevant to the shakuhachi world today as well.
