Calligraphy time

Here is some of my calligraphy that I got mounted lately followed by some made by my father in law.

The heart sutra is not bad but the 2 other ones were chosen by my wife she felt that there was a childish feel to my beginners hand so she wanted those mounted.

Poem about the origin of the Shunpukan name

Throughout heaven and earth there is not a piece of ground where a single stick could be inserted;
I am glad that all things are void, myself and the world:
Honored be the sword, three feet long, wielded by the great Yuan swordsmen;
For it is like cutting a spring breeze in a flash of lightning.

Enlightenment verso of Kyogen Chikan

One stroke and all is gone,
No need of stratagem or cure;
Each and every action
Manifests the ancient way.
My spirit is never downcast,
I leave no tracks behind me,
Enlightenment is beyond speech,
Beyond gesture;
Those who are emancipated
Call it the unsurpassed.

Re: Calligraphy time

Awesome stuff, and so beautiful.  I look at samples of my own handwriting and half the time I can't even read it.  Well, this I can't read either, but it sure has an amazing aesthetic quality

Sebastien,

I agree with your wife. The simplistic, free style is very nice indeed.
It goes without saying that your father-in-laws work is wonderful (I've
admired it in the past if you'll recall).

Re: Calligraphy time

Not bad at all! Something to be said about the "beginner's mind/hand", no? As for your father-in-law -- looks like a pro.

A couple of weeks ago, a friend of a friend heard that I practice calligraphy and she asked me to write her something. I was handed some really tacky paper and expected to make a piece of art. Well, I tossed the paper aside, grabbed a nice grey-blue stone and started thinking of all the profound thing I could write on it. Finally, I turned to my friend and asked, "what do you think I should write?" As the former owner of an art gallery, I was hoping for something simple yet profound. "開心" ("kai syin" in Chinese) she said, which means 'happy'. Well, I guessed the simple part right!

Very nice. I was just reading on how a beginners hand can bring out very good work. It is not crowded by all different ideas.Very nice. It makes me want to pick up my sum'e brush again.

I was not conscious whether I was riding on the wind or the wind was riding on me.

Thanks for the good words on my sloppy left hand.

I had forgotten that I had posted those pictures a while back. For now I just try to keep up with my Shakuhachi skills and wiping my own ass all by myself smile M.S seems to take the best out of me little by little anyhow I will try to see what kind of stuff my crippled hands can crank out. We never know maybe it enhanced my calligraphy skills in some magical way. Luckily I have kept a couple of heart sutras and some other stuff I had written before getting this damm disease so I can leave this to my little one.

Re: Calligraphy time

Sorry about the MS. It is nice to be able to enjoy the simpler things in life though.I think people always have a tendency to make things more complicated than they need to.
