Meri notes and how to improve their strength

Hi Everyone

Iam new to the forum and have been making shakuhachi for about 5 years now. I recently made a 2.0 from a thin piece of medake
everything is good about the instrument except the meri notes are difficult particularly tsu meri
this is the first time I have encountered this problem

can anyone shed some light?

In general, the bigger the bore, the easier the meri's (assuming a pretty typical aspect ratio), and vise versa, especially when you get a blowing end bore diameter under 2 cm.

Zen is not easy.
It takes effort to attain nothingness.
And then what do you have?
Bupkes.

Re: Meri notes and how to improve their strength

Thanks Edosan

I have also read that under cutting the finger holes can Improve the meri notes. Has anyone experimented with this
approach? keeping in mind that this also raises the pitch of the basic note

Re: Meri notes and how to improve their strength

Hi, Dave...

There is some very good reading about undercutting, pro's & con's, tone, etc. in quite a few threads here.  Two good ones are located at:

http://www.shakuhachiforum.com/viewtopic.php?id=2929

http://www.shakuhachiforum.com/viewtopic.php?id=2967

Much more will surface through a forum search for "undercutting", as well...

Enjoy!
