Need help identifying mystery Myoan-ji double CD...

Hi.  I have a double CD, purchased at Myoan-ji, that I'm having trouble identifying.  (My ability to read Japanese is virtually nil and I've exhausted my usual sources of translation and the directory at komuso.com doesn't list it.)

Scanned images of covers and liner notes are here:
mystery_myoan-ji_album_1_2.jpg
mystery_myoan-ji_album_3_4.jpg (tracks appear to be listed as 1-20, across the 2 CDs)
mystery_myoan-ji_album_5.jpg
mystery_myoan-ji_album_6.jpg

Would some kind soul be able to tell me the album title, artist name, and track names?  I'd be very grateful.  Thanks!

-Darren.

Re: Need help identifying mystery Myoan-ji double CD...

Here is a translation, maybe not the best though. If there are some mistakes with the names someone plaese correct them.

The artist's name is Inoue Choshin. Here is his dojo's website, it's all in Japanese but there are some of their pictures here and there.
http://members3.jcom.home.ne.jp/suizen/

The CD title is 'Jinashi Shakuhachi de Fuku Myoan Shakuhachi hoka', but he also has 'Jinashi Nobekan de Fuke' written above his name Inoue Choushin, 井上肇心.

Disc 1.
Myoan Tazan Ha:
1. Honte Shirabe (Choshi)
2. Hachigaeshi Kyoku
3. Yamato Choshi
4. Kyorei
5. Koku
6. Mukaiji
7. Tsuru no Sugomori

Jin Nyodo Den:
1. Ajikan

Myoan Shinpo Ryu:
1. Sange
2. Shouko
3. Shinseki

Ichigetsu ji Den:
1. Ekoh

Disc 2.

Fudaiji Den:
1. Tamuke Gyo

Temple Origins Unknown:
1. Yobi Teki
2. Ou Teki
3. Taigu

Echigo Myoanji Den:
1. San ya

Kinpu Ryu:
1. Shirabe
2. Sagariha

Ro Shakuhachi:
1. Honte Shirabe

Hope this helps a little. How are his CDs by the way?

Re: Need help identifying mystery Myoan-ji double CD...

Josh, that's brilliant!  Thanks so much.

As for how the CDs sound...  I tend to rip and archive my CDs first, and then enjoy them.  (Thus the desire for some English tags.)  Paranoid, yes.  But especially over CDs that aren't easy to come by on this side of the Pacific.

So I'll let you know after a few listens...

Thanks again!

-Darren.

Sure, no problem. You may have realized already but I made a spelling mistake in the beginning. It should be Myoan Taizan Ha, forgot the 'i'.

Inoue's group, the 「明暗肇道会」- Myoan Chou Dou Kai, seem pretty interesting and active. They're based in Sapporo with affiliates from Myoanji in Kyoto, and from the pics on their website you can see them doing takuhatsu in full komuso attire on the streets of Hokaido and playing at various temples around the country such as Myoanji and places in Shikoku.

Re: Need help identifying mystery Myoan-ji double CD...

Yup, I caught the small "Taizan" mistake, thanks.

Okay, off-the-cuff review after listening to it through twice...   I really like his playing a lot.

Recording quality and acoustics are decent.  His feeling and energy showed through well, I think.  Very enjoyable to listen to with headphones.  These are honkyoku on jinashi, so feeling is everything.  (Okay, that's not fair to jiari, but you know what I mean...)

He closes with a vocal rendition (sung tsu-re re-re u-ha-... etc. style) of Honte Shirabe, which caught me off guard and I really enjoyed the energy of his voice too.

Wish there were more tracks, so that pretty much says it all...

-Darren.

I wrote to the email address on the website and got this response:

I don't know what "two sheet" means above, but ordering appears
fairly straightforward.

What's obviously missing is a mailing address in Japan.  I've
written to ask for one.  When it arrives, I'll post it here.

Re: Need help identifying mystery Myoan-ji double CD...

Hey guys,
On his website for the cd it says "2枚組", ni mai kumi. The mai is used as a counter for flat things, such as a sheet of paper, or in this case it should be for cds. So I think he made a translating mistake by saying 2 sheets instead of double cd.

The address of his Dojo where I think you can send him a letter or postal order etc. is:
〒062-0051 札幌市豊平区月寒東1条19丁目2-45
明暗尺八札幌分道場(明暗肇道会) 明暗導主 井上肇心

Inoue Choshin
Myoan Shakuhachi Sapporo bun Dojo (Myoan Choshin Kai)
Hokkaido, Sapporo-shi,  Toyohira-ku, Tsukisamu higashi 1 Jyo 19-2-45
062-0051
Japan

At this point in my CD collection I really don't need any more honkyoku CDs that replicate what I already have.  I'm interested in these because there are a few pieces that I don't have on other CDs, but $45+post is a lot for a few tunes, unless the pieces I already have are played significantly differently on these disks.

Could you make some statements about the extent to which Choshin Inoue's playing differs from Okuda or Jin Nyodo or any of  the Japanese players you might have in your own CD collection?

Or better yet, put a couple of short passages from the more common pieces (e.g., Kyorei, Tsuru no Sugomori, Ajikan) online so that we could get a feel for his work?  Nothing complete, maybe 30 seconds or so.

Hi Bruce.  Well, I'm a beginner with beginner's ears, but as to the extent Choshin's playing differs from Okuda, for example, (whose playing I'm fairly familiar with)... a lot.  Not in any way I can label "good" or "bad", so please check the samples below for yourself.  (But then I consider the way Okuda plays to be at one quite unique end of the spectrum.)  I'm looking forward to many more listenings to learn and/or notice more.  Beginners ears...  wink

Sure.  I'm doing this under the assumption that Choshin would not mind me posting a few excerpts, less than a minute each.  An excerpt is worth a thousand words.  Enjoy.

Inoue Choushin - Ajikan (Jin Nyodo Den) - EXCERPT FROM START
Inoue Choushin - San ya (Echigo Myoanji Den) - EXCERPT NEAR MIDDLE
Inoue Choushin - Tsuru no Sugomori - EXCERPT NEAR END

-Darren.
