I'm a beginner, learning Kuro Kami, and I have the piece my teacher gave me. As we went over it one day, I asked him what these vertical lines meant. He squinted, and then said he didn't know. The line in question is to the left of a string of notes. It runs next to go no hi and ri. There are a few of these on my music, does anyone know what they mean?
Thanks!

Those lines mean that you (the shakuhachi) are playing those notes while the shamisen is not. So don't get thrown off when the shamisen stops, the strings will return at U.

you will see that often in later sankyoku pieces. helps tremendously when playing in ensemble.
