Clearly the guy is about to perform a nukiuchi against his opponent. However, he has figured out that pulling out his shakuhachi instead of the katana and using it to strike his opponent would be much more effective and also comes with that famous sucker punch bonus because the other guy just doesn't see it coming. This sort of move is somewhat predictable by checking the size of the shakuhachi that the guy is carrying. If it turns out to be well over 4 shaku long, it's most likely not meant for playing. Same thing if it is much thicker than your arm. Lack of utaguchi on the flute also kind of gives it away.

Given that the japanese have martial arts that focus on using just about anything as a weapon, I wonder if there are still any surviving arts which utilize the shakuhachi. Unlike some of those really silly weapons, shakuhachi should work quite well as a club and it might actually stay intact for a couple of blows.
