Notation for beginners

Hello,

I'm a beginner, and would like to know what compositions you recommend to start with.
And also where to get them.

Thanks,
Israel RN

Re: Notation for beginners

Isreal RN, if you haven't already, I strongly suggest that you seek out a qualified teacher.  They will certainly set you on the correct path to get the most out of your experience from the point of view of learning technique at the right time through the right piece.  If you have no teacher nearby, internet lessons are available.
All the best to you.

Re: Notation for beginners

Isreal RN, I recommend you seek instruction from a teacher too. Michael Gould is a great teacher and you can take Skype lessons with him if you can't find a local teacher.  See: http://www.chikuzenstudios.com for more info.  If you are interested in doing it yourself see: Carl Abbott's book, Blowing Zen for a good start point.  Good Luck!

Re: Notation for beginners

Kyorei was the first piece that I approached, without a teacher.  I would suggest getting instruction too, but I waited a few months to do that to make sure I was into the shakuhachi 100%.  Kyorei is good because it can all be played in the lower octave, the notation is fairly straight forward, and the emphasis is not on lots of finger techniques.

Re: Notation for beginners

Beware that Carl Abbott's cd contains very sharp tsu meris. The book is excellent, however. You can start with a teacher immediately in my opinion.

Re: Notation for beginners

Thank you all for your suggestions,

Yes, I plan to get lessons from a teacher, I've already found one, but he lives in a different city than me... so I also want to do a lot of self-studying. And I don't have much money either, so even if I cannot take enough lessons, I'd like to keep practicing.

I think I'll get my hands on Abbott's book too.

Regards.
