An intensive workshop of the shakuhachi will be led by Elizabeth Reian Bennett for the week of July 26-August 1, at the Intercultural Institute of the New England Conservatory.
This workshop will present a basic intellectual, practical and cultural understanding of the shakuhachi. Lectures and demonstrations survey shakuhachi pieces from the past to the present, and explain the link to the cultural disciplines of No, tea ceremony and Zen. Information about Japanese music and culture is intertwined with learning how to play or 'sing' the instrument. We will compose a short piece, and present a final performance of material honed during the week. Wind players, composers, teachers, music amateurs and people with an interest in Japan should all feel comfortable in this class. For more information see:
