My Shakuhachi, Let Me Show You It

After one year of playing on a wooden shakuhachi, I ponied up the $1,000 to buy a 'beginner' shakuhachi from my teacher. He showed me three to choose from, and we kind of agreed this one was the best.

My wife noticed right away that it sound much better. "More like the sound on that NYC Shakuhachi Club CD" she said, which made me smile.

Here are some shots. If anyone recognizes or has info about the hanko, please share it with me. Thanks!

Sakamoto san,
The 1.8 I play is by the same maker. John Singer got the shakuhachi so I will inquire again. I believe he lived in Gifu and the name sound like Binko but that doesn't sound right anymore. I've forgotten. Mine is oval shaped and has an amazing sweet sound. I'll see what John says.

Re: My Shakuhachi, Let Me Show You It

Wow, that's so exciting!

My wife says the bottom kanji means light, as in the opposite of dark, not heavy. And the first kanji means history.  I can ask my teacher, because I think the maker of these shakuhachi is my teacher's teacher. I'm not sure. We have a major language barrier, which isn't helped at all by the fact that my teacher is a classical Japanese teacher in high school and always uses words I don't know.

I'm looking forward to what Mr. Singer has to say.

Thanks for your reply.

Re: My Shakuhachi, Let Me Show You It

chikuzen-san,
I spoke to my teacher in my terrible Japanese, and here's what I found out:

The maker's name is Takeuchi Shikou. The take in his name is the actual kanji for bamboo, but it is a coincidence that his name happens to have bamboo in it and that he's a shakuhachi maker.

He is my teacher's teacher's teacher, and he is 90 years old and no longer makes shakuhachi.

I think that's what I got from our conversation. If I learn different, I'll let you know, or if you have anything you want me to ask, I will try.

Good wife! wink

The flute Chikuzen has from the same maker is quite nice, he's well regarded. $1000 is a super price if it's similar quality.

Ssakamoto-san,
Thanks for the info.  If your flute is like mine, I'd keep a hold of it.
