JUNE CHIKUZEN RO CAMP: JUNE 5~7, '09.

WHAT: June Chikuzen Ro Camp; June 5~7

I happy to report that we will be having our summer RO Camp at the home of Craig Ciola outside of Marion, Ohio again (check Camps and Retreats on the website at chikuzenstudios.com).

WHERE: 9696 Harding Highway West, LaRue, OH  43332.

Craig's place is a beautiful quiet country setting where we can play out in nature without bothering anyone (does shakuhachi really bother anyone?) and without us being disturbed by unwanted distractions. Craig has bamboo grooves, carp ponds, and a newly built amphitheater (’08)!

HOW:
The study format is as usual:

Two Groups: beginners & Intermediate/Advanced.
Some time will be spent in one large group studying together but we also split up into two groups according to levels.

Study songs:
1.    One main Honkyoku:
Beginner’s: Sanya (Yama Tani or Mt. Valley).

Advanced:  TBA (requests are taken now).
2.    Two Fukuda Rando songs: Tabibito no Uta &  Gekko Roteki.
3.    Two (pure) Minyo songs: Mogamigawa Funauta & Mamuragawa Ondo.
4.    SanKyoku: Yugao.
5.    Modern: Emu, “Picture Dream”.

One Lecture Workshop entitled: “The Nature of the Beast (shakuhachi): How to Study Accordingly in a Natural Way”.

You may sleep indoors or outdoors at this camp (there are three extra bedrooms: first come first serve); or on the floor with mats and bags. Most people will sleep outdoors in tents. If you don't have one, I have a 10 man tent bigger than most apartments and ample mats and bags.
All participants help out in the kitchen for at least one meal. Maybe cooking isn't your thing so cutting and washing may be! Students living within driving distance will share the job of choosing a menu with another student. Participants coming from afar will add $30. to the registration fee for food, but still help in the kitchen.

Registration fee is $200. (Recession fee. $50. off last year's price!).
Add $30. For food if you are coming from afar. Please send registration fee to: Michael Gould
2641 Idlewood Rd. 2F
Cleveland Heights, OH 44118
(313)600-2610. Camp booklet and Cds will be provided upon receipt of registration fee.

Also, check out the website at chikuzenstudios.com to read more about camps and view the upcoming events on the calendar.

I am going to be there and I can't wait.  Craig has one of the most beautiful locations for learning shakuhachi.  I was there last year and it is so serene.  He has a large zen garden with lots of room for introspection and private shakuhachi practice.  If you have ever wanted to have a great shakuhachi get away this is a great place to do it.  Michael is a great teacher with a gift for seeing what your next step is and helping you accomplish it.  I hope to see you there!

Re: JUNE CHIKUZEN RO CAMP: JUNE 5~7, '09.

Looks like everyone who was there last year but for one specially invited maker will be at summer camp this year,  even me!       Anyone thinking about this should definitely give it a go,   soon it will be the highlight of your shakuhachi year.   Where else can you get lessons from Michael Chikuzen Gould for 3 days straight?   Every year gets better,  we even have an open discussion and critique at the end of camp to make improvements for the next year.   It is an excellent place for a beginner to clarify muddled shakuhachi concepts and a way to experience another teacher other than yours if you have one.  Most of all,  you leave with inspiration,  after hearing and seeing your peers playing from levels below you to just a level above,  and then to aspire to play like the sweet sounding advanced students who are of intermediate level or more.                                        BTW,   Brian P.,  I wish I lived in Osacala, Florida, too,   the Bally's Health Club in the photo behind you looks so much better than my junky one!   We have a minature leaning tower of pisa , but youse guys have a Eiffel Tower!  Wow!  ;>)

That Bally's and Eiffel Tower was in Vegas.  No luck getting one here in Ocala.  I can't wait to see you at the camp again.  It is going to be a blast!  I got my tickets the other day and I will be bringing my wife and son.  How's the Gyokusui treating you?

The June camp organizers are offering the option of one extra day for those who wish to stay thru monday afternoon. Add $100. to the fee for the extra day of lessons and food/drink.

Brian might beat us with the green laddle if he finds out that Jack (Daniel's) held the upper hand last year at camp? There was one of the blue bottles there.

Hmmm...I believe the rule on that is that Brian has to actually show up to beat you with the Green Ladle. Fair is fair.

Hey!  Brian P!    Miss you, too, bud!   This is like a shakuhachi family reunion!  It  will be good to meet your family.       I promise to try to drink more whiskey than last time with you guys this summer,  although I suffer from the dreaded Asian alcohol induced drinking disease,   I am willing to tempt death over sensibility.   Since Brian Ritchie is not coming again,  I will not buy the Bombay like I did last year to tempt him,  but will be buying a bottle of Dinkel's instead.                The Gyokusui's doing great,   Thank you!    Tsu you tsuoon!!!!   Clinton

Definitely bring some Dickel.  With Tanya (my wife) there we are going to need it.  We will have some too.  We'll bring Jack too in case anyone is into that too.  (Like any of us will care after a drink or two smile  It is starting to sound more like a drinking party than a RO camp at this point.  Just like I like it wink  Remember your speedo and I'll have the tats!  If anyone wants to revisit the last RO camp at Craig's you can see it here.  http://harpgear.com/rocamp/

Do the tats mean you don't need a Speedo?

Just curious....  smile

No the speedo is just Clinton's shtick.  I don't want to step on toes so I just do the tats thing.  We are going to do a reality show about an "uptight" (not true at all, but what on TV is) Asian guy who lives with "free wheelin'" tattooed guy and the hijinks will ensue....  Watch for it on a corny Youtube channel in the future.

Hey,  just because I wear a Speedo to keep my posture in a finely tuned vertical position when I am practicing shakuhachi doesn't mean I am all that "uptight".    I am just wary of the influence of the white demon beast that drinks immense quantities  of whiskey and has  historical cave drawings  on his breasts.      Clinton " Speedo " Moy

That sounds like the last word to me (at least we can hope).

There is proof in Brian's photos that we do actually play shakuhachi at this camp.

The June camp will offer an extra day for those who wish for more shakuhachi. We will offer the extended camp thru monday, June 8 until 4:00pm. That gives us three more sessions: sunday night, monday morning and monday afternoon. Add $100. for the extended camp if registering.

For those who can't make it I will be blogging from there and putting up pictures, audio and video as it becomes available like I did at the last camp.  You can find a link to it in my signature.

You can find the last camp entries starting at 12/8/2008.

I highly recommend Chikuzen's Ro camp. Imagine learning a foreign language and practicing only once a week, or less! Participating in the Ro camp would be total immersion and the benefits are immeasurable.

For myself, Chikuzen's tips stay firmly implanted after a day of playing and is applicable in other situations. Just one example, during the evening social activities while partaking in Brian P's Special Edition Jack Daniels' tasting sessions, I could still hear Michael's experienced advice, "chin up"!

I may be heading that advice soon as Tairaku is in town yikes

Hmm? Perry, if I remember right, I think you guys were advising each other into the night well after I went to sleep! Maybe what happened was that you got all of them drunk and sold them shakuhachi! Ha Ha!!  There are some photos of those head positions in Brian's blog. Both when playing shakuhachi and when playing Jack Daniels! Evidence!

Re: JUNE CHIKUZEN RO CAMP: JUNE 5~7, '09.

I am still getting the last bits of blog entries from the camp together so if you check again in the next couple of days you will see the last bits I have.  Sorry it took some time to get it all together but I was so motivated to play after camp I haven't wanted to put the flute down in my free time to finish the entries.

Thanks,
Brian
