Shakuhachi Summer Camp of the Rockies XII

This year's Shakuhachi Summer Camp of the Rockies XII is just three weeks away!

Have you ever asked yourself, why do I play the shakuhachi? Well, the most important writer on the shakuhachi of the 19th century Hisamatsu Fûyô did just that.
At shakucamp this year, RILEY LEE will chair a forum on Hisamatsu's "Shakuhachi Hitori Mondô," Solo Dialogues on the Shakuhachi.
KAORU KAKIZAKAI, releasing his new CD on June 24th, will teach Tamuke, as it was performed at WSFO8 in Sydney last year.
YOSHIO KURAHASHI will teach a unique Honkyoku arrangement for Aji-kan, by Miyagawa Nyozan.
DAVID KANSUKE II WHEELER and YOKO HIRAOKA will teach the ensemble Echigo-jishi, Lion Dancers of Echigo.
These are just a few curriculum samples.

Visit www.shakucamp.com/ for more info and registration, before it's too late.

This year's camp again offers a specially formulated Beginner's Curriculum and a highly concentrated Intermediate/Advanced Course, and of course some seriously delightful shaku-community. Our goal is no less than to make your Shakucamp experience the most valuable 5 days you will spend with the shakuhachi this year.
HIGHLIGHTS:
    1. "Special Beginner Curriculum." For anyone who has come into the possession of their first shakuhachi any time in the past two years, this camp is for you! The six core faculty of Shakucamp since its inception, Christopher Yohmei Blasdel, Michael Chikuzen Gould, Kaoru Kakizakai, Yoshio Kurahashi, Riley Lee and David Wheeler, representing almost two centuries' teaching experience, continue to modify and improve what may be the most effective Shakuhachi Beginner Curriculum to be found.
For the duration of camp, all beginners will be following this curriculum with one of its authors. Faculty will change daily so students can enjoy the individual strengths of each faculty member.
    2. "Advanced Curriculum" Teachers will spend a lot of time concentrating on a modest number of pieces, thoroughly covering technique and musicality, thus guaranteeing you will come away from camp with new repertoire and technique under your belt.
    3. "Universal Curriculum" For one period each day, ALL camp participants, from Beginner to Advanced, join together for lectures and instruction on some core facet of the Shakuhachi: repertoire, technique, theory, philosophy, history, lore and more.
    4. "Shakucamp Jump-start Program"  You can actually start your camp experience before arriving at Sunrise Ranch in late June. Camp registrants will be given access to a private page on the Shakucamp website where sheet music files of the teaching materials and pieces offered at camp can be browsed, perused, and downloaded at will. Audio files will also be made available for musical reference.
Our strong faculty will be offering a wide ranging and very deep curriculum. In addition to the standard classical Honkyoku (Zen solos) and Sankyoku (shamisen/koto/shakuhachi), modern solos and ensembles, faculty will teach improvisation and much more.
It is going to be a wonderful 4 nights and 5 days. We hope to see you there!
Cheers,
David Wheeler, Kansuke II (2009 Shakuhachi Summer Camp of the Rockies, Faculty
Representative)

XII already! That's crazy! Congratulations!!
If anyone here has not gone to one of these, you really should. It's one of the best "shakuhachi immersion" experiences you can get. Great teaching, great people, great environment. Though it's been quite a few years since I last went, I have nothing but good memories. I HIGHLY and unreservedly recommend the camp.

The Rockies shakuhachi camp is in a beautiful location (in the Rocky Mountains, near Estes Park). Organic food, comfortable rooms (camping option is available), superb organisation, the most perfect air for blowing RO, and a tremendous programme, including a Master's Concert and a Participant's Concert. As Nyokai pointed out, this camp has been running for 12 years - long enough for many of the beginner participants of the early years to have now become master teachers in their own right - and it is run well.

Yes, it is more expensive than some camps, but there is really no comparison. For a bit more (which, amortized over a year, is not much), you get so much: five or more teachers, including a koto/shamisen teacher/performer. All of the shakuhachi teachers are from different backgrounds, different lineages, different repertoire, with different vantage points and different ways of explaining things. All of these elements add up to Shakuhachi Bliss.

What I don't understand is why Nyokai sensei is the only one on the Forum who's commented on David's announcement. And why this thread has attracted only 138 views so far. Humm......

HEY!! This year, all of the classes will be taught entirely on jinashi/jimori/jiari flutes!!!! Which reminds me - I'm still waiting for a reply to some questions in another thread in another universe.

A good sense of humour is essential for longevity, whatever form I take.

God bless the 'Soaps', they have given us an insight into the nature of dukkha.

Sounds like a great Camp, would love to be there, I'll bring a drum.

I accidentally deleted this topic when I was editing an errant post. But I hit the "back" button and retrieved the riveting repartee for posterity by copying it. Above. roll

Ken do you know how to restore the topic to its previous glory?
