As per Ed's Mr.Spock-on-espresso-like logical suggestion, I'm starting this thread as a general link-depository for all things excellent and ethnomusicological on YouTube:
I'll start the ball rolling with the Hmong Cultural Center Youtube Chanel: http://www.youtube.com/user/weblarm
A mix of lectures with several videos of ceremonial music.

And here's the Kyl-Kobyz vid again:

One thing it might be useful to do, when approprate and easily obtained, is to put some sort of informational reference to the posted
music (mp3, video, whatever it may be), viz:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kobyz

Good suggestion!

This stuff is quite emotional for me as a lot of it is set in some of my favourite parts of the world (my avatar is a photo I took in Burma)

Thank you.

These two links are not YouTube, but they both have so much wonderful world music for free that they simply must be mentioned.
First is the website for the Smithsonian Folkways Project. It has a folk music radio, channels dedicated to different parts of the world, a bunch of programs on various topics, and many fascinating CDs for sale with free clips. Possibly the best World Music site on the web.

And the second is the archive for NPR's New Sounds. If you ever have an hour of listening time free and want to explore some new type of music, you can browse through their archive of old programs. It's a great way to easily learn about the sound of a different genre.

Wow, thanks for that Folkways link. I still have a bunch of Folkways LPs on vinyl, part of a fairly huge blues collection I hold onto (even though I haven't had a turntable since about 1992). Never even occured to me to look them up online!

Hello All-
This is also non-Youtube link but great stuff:
http://aris.ss.uci.edu/rgarfias/kiosk/media.html
If you scroll to the bottom there is a link to his field recordings. There is a link for Japan in which there are many old 78s of sankyoku and Gagaku if I remember correctly. For some reason the Japan link did not work when I just checked it moments ago. Perhaps it will be up again soon. It is worth checking back for.
ENJOY!

Prem, good to see you back here!
Closer to home (for me at least):

A bit further away:
The Uyghurs:

My favourite kol kobyz piece! I want to play this instrument! Akku is a song about swans. Perhaps the equivalent of tsuru no sugomori in one way. Make sure to listen till the swans take off:

By some very lucky guessing, I found the Japan page at:
http://aris.ss.uci.edu/rgarfias/kiosk/japan.html
It looks like he moved from one server to another, but forgot to update the one link.
