Big flute spec's

Quick question!

Does the formulae of Ken LaCosse use in the pdf apply when making
flutes bigger than 1.8's please?
i.e. 12.1, 1/10th length between holes, 3.6 etc.
say for a 2.4

I'm going to turn a piece of ash, and see what happens
when I try to make a flute from it.

Second quick question - just thought of - is the diameter
of the bore a special relationship to length i.e. 'Irish' flutes are
about say (30) times longer than the diameter of the bore.
Does this apply to Shakhachi (shakuhachii, shakuhachies, shakuhachi's) too?

Thanks

EDF,

The formula applies to all sizes of shakuhachi but it depends on many other variables; bore volume/length ratio, hole size, top and bottom diameter, etc. There is some information you may find helpful if you do a search for 'formula' in this forum.

Yes, there is a special relationship between the bore and length. One way to think of this relationship is that there is a window of bore/length ratios (aspect ratio) which will work. The bore/length ratios spanning this window have their own unique features. Go too far outside this window either way and tuning and playability start to suffer. Another search for 'aspect ratio' should bring up some good past information on this.

Good luck!

Ken

Thank you  Ken.

That's just what I wanted to know.
