In most pieces named Sanya, the kanji is 三谷 which means 'three valleys'. This is often noted to be in reference to the way the pieces moves between otsu (lower octave) and kan (middle octave) and back and forth, as if one were traversing mountain valleys.

Another piece called Sanya has different kanji -- 山谷 which means 'mountain valley'. Some features of the song are similar to that of the three valley pieces.

I read somewhere that Sanya came from a Sanskrit word. I asked around and was told that it may relates to shunyata/sanyata, which means enlightenment. The komuso.com site has several other explanations.... Sanskrit word for 'meeting', safe delivery in childbirth, etc.
