Fue hole positions?

Now that I have a nice shakuhachi, thanks to Perry, I am wanting to try out some other types of flutes. I have found plenty of resources for 6 and 8 hole flutes and have made a pretty good 6 hole from some PVC. I really want at Japanese style flute with 7 holes. I found these instructions.

http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~dl1s-ymgc/tsukur-e.htm

The instructions call for an ID of 11mm, but my pipe has 15mm. How should I approach hole placement and length of tube? Can I scale things up based on the difference in diameter? Any ideas or places to look would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Fue hole positions?

Hi Yuusui,
My first thought is that you should find 11mm pipe, or something close, so you can just follow the specs.

Or, use the 15mm knowing that you are just making the prototype. Do the math then drill the holes. They may have to be slightly larger than the holes for the 11mm flute. If the holes are off, tape and relocate and keep refining until a you find success. Then make a new "clean" flute based on that prototype.

Is Yuusui your maker monikor for plasticwater? smile

Good luck!

One can buy plans from Mejiro.  There might be one size that uses a 15mm bore:

I will play around with that. Thanks.

It is actual Leisurely Water, 悠水. That is the pen name I was given as a Japanese calligrapher.

I found a kit with a book at about $160. Is there a separate set of plans? Could you post a direct link? Thanks.
