Hey, my name is Crow-sama, and i've just discovered the wonders of Japan's traditional music through my college course's module for world music.
I would like to learn to play the Shakuhachi for this module, as a hobby and instrument to add to my repertoire, but have no clue where to start, what kind to buy, how to play, where to buy.
So I guess you could call me a little optimistic to hope to learn it by june.
If anyone could give me any advice at all, it would be greatly appreciated.

Crow-sama,
You could certainly learn about it by next June, but to acquire proficiency on the shakuhachi basically takes a life time. I'm not suggesting that there aren't intermediate places from which one can demonstrate and express their ability and enjoy the outcome though. In fact, the whole journey is full of that as well as a myriad of other hurdles and stepping stones. The best advice is to embark on this with an open mind and no concept of a hard-set finish line. It will become constantly rewarding.

I'm considering buying a Shakuhachi Yuu, as it's cheap, and some people have told me they're good for beginners.
I know it will take a long time to become proficient, and this isn't something i'm going to give up on, even after college.
This is something I want to learn, and I don't care how long it takes.
I'm looking forward to learning, and I can see this forum will be a great place to learn, make friends, and get tips and advice.
Thank you

"This is something I want to learn, and I don't care how long it takes."
very important attitude.
as you will see by looking through other posts by people just starting, the usual response is to, if possible, find a teacher. if you are serious about learning traditional music, that is fairly well essential.
The Yuu is a pretty good starting point.
It is indeed, as Jeff said, a long journey, refining not only your sound/technique, but (at the risk of sounding like a cheesy movie script) very definitely yourself as well...

We love cheesy movie scripts 'round here

Welcome to the forum.
Yup, long journey, slow progress, very satisfying - that's learning to play shakuhachi in a nutshell.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I have only been studying music in general for about 2 months, and I've learned that guitar through tab, not musical scripture. Basically, I'm an absolute beginner to music.
Again, I don't care how long it takes, I am determined to learn it.
