Pre-WWII sokyoku and gagaku recordings

On his website (https://eee.uci.edu/programs/rgarfias/s … japan.html) ethnomusicologist Robert Garfias has MP3s of some rare pre-WWII recordings of sokyoku and gagaku from the collection of 78s of his koto teacher in the 1950s, Haru Suwada. Shakuhachi players on these recordings include Yoshida Seifu, Notomi Judo I, and Araki Kodo IV. Well worth a listen.

Mastery does not lay in the mastery of technique, but in penetrating the heart of the music. However, he who has not mastered the technique will not penetrate the heart of the music.

Rick,

Thanks for posting this find. Very interesting.

Better audio quality than I expected. Those 78s must have been well
cared for.
