Takahashi Kuzan - History of Fuke-shû Shakuhachi

Hi all,

this night I had a good conversation with one of the forum-members. After some research I had found that Takahashi Kuzan has wrote a book, is there any possibility to get this book in english. I searched the net but I havne´t found a store to buy it.

As you know I study Fuke-shû Shakuhachi but I am not so clear about the history so it will be nice to have a book to read.

Thanks and all the best,

Chrsitopher

Hi Christopher
I am not aware of any English translations of the book. If you would like to see some of Kuzan's lineage, there is a page on my website here:

In case you haven't seen it, this sight has a few Fukeshu nuggets on it:

Re: Takahashi Kuzan - History of Fuke-shû Shakuhachi

Christopher,

If you would like to grasp the history the easiest literature may be:

'The Shakuhachi - History and Development' written by Kamisangō Yūkō. This is translated into English by Chrsitopher Yomei Blasdel and is Part II in Blasdel's book: The Shakuhachi: A Manual for Leaning.

'The Shakuhachi and its Music' by Tsukitani Tsuneko. This is a chapter in The Ashgate Companion to
Japanese Music, edited by Alison M. Tokita and David W. Hughes.

There are other good sources too, but these are good starting points. There are 2 shakuhachi books in German,

Die Solo-honkyoku der Tozan-Schule by Ingrid Fritsch. Published by Bärenreiter in 1978. Obviously this is about the Tozan school, but as far as I remember there was a short intro about the Fuke sect history.... but I must admit I am not sure anymore.

The same is for this book
Die Shakuhachi der Kinko-Schule by Andreas Gutzwiller. Also published by Bärenreiter Kassel in 1983. Again I can't remember how much writing there was on Fuke sect history. But perhaps worth checking out. Next time I go to the library I can check it out for you too.

Good luck!

Re: Takahashi Kuzan - History of Fuke-shû Shakuhachi

Hi there,

thanks for the links but I allready visited the sites before.

Kiku, many thanks for the info, I think I will grap one of this books. As I know the German books have not so much about the Fuke-Shû History.

Thanks and best wishes,

Christopher
