Hi guys,
I walk about 6-10 miles a a day and was wondering if anyone has any experience with walking and playing the Shakuhachi? I'm guessing that in old times, as people were walking from one place to another, much practice was going on as they were travelling, say in a forest.
Your thoughts on the subject?
Best,

I do it when letting the dogs walk around outside. Its great except when you walk on uneven ground. That kind of messing up your playing.

Here is a fun little game to try...
Slowly walk around your house, playing shakuhachi. Try long tones. Eventually you will find the acoustical sweet spots in the house. There always seems to be at least one area where the sound pops out for you. Sometimes (as in the case of my fathers old house) you will only find one spot, where only one note jumps out. For some reason I cannot even begin to explain any of this, I seem to have the best luck when using the note Chi.
But yeah, walking and playing is good stuff, especially for those of us who sit hunched over the computer screen for hours at a time.

Steve Lacy recommended practicing scales walking, one note per step. Of course that was on sax.
You have to be careful if you play while walking because you can easily mess up your teeth and mouth that way.
There are a few pieces (I think "Sogei no kyoku" is mentioned as one) which are supposed to be "walking meditation" pieces.

You mean, like, when you walk into stuff?

Another good reason to wear a 'Tangai'.
