Intensive Shakuhachi Week in Europe

Hi there,

I will quit my job in January 2010, after that I am planing to travel for about an month in Europe, so are there any teachers in Europe where I can spend some weeks to study? I play since 1 Year and I am still a beginner I had about 20 or more lessons with Dietmar Herriger here in Berlin, he teaches old Myoan pieces from Fudaji Temple in Fukoka in Fu-Ho-U (Chikuho?!) notation but I can read Kinko-notation too.

I am planing to travel in February or March 2010 and spend some weeks with study. So if there are any teacher that are willing to teach me it will be nice to contact me.

Best wishes

Hi Chris. If you find yourself in Dublin, get in touch. I tend to be very busy with work during the week but weekends are possible if you plan on a short visit.

Hi Christopher
If you're in Spain I recommend Antonio Olías. He teaches Kinko-ryu, some other honkyoku (mainly from Yokoyama Katsuya's school and some others) and modern music. He's a great player and a very nice guy. Here's his site:

Re: Intensive Shakuhachi Week in Europe

Hi all, thanks for your information. I am getting sure to do my journay in Feb. About coming to Dublin, I think that is out of my budget but thanks alot. Spain will be an alternativ too maybe. I contacted Kiku about having some lessons in Denmark. And Perry I will stay in touch, thanks alot!

You know I spend nearly all my time at work in the last few months, but I am really addicted to play Shakuhachi. I think it would be a very nice expirence to meet some other teachers and learn more about Shakuhachi.

Anyway Justin, do you know more about the meaning "Myoan" my teacher told me something about it but I dont remeber the whole thing. Is it the same like "Ying and Yang" or the "Tao"?

Thanks all and best wishes!

Re: Intensive Shakuhachi Week in Europe

Hi Christopher
Well firstly, I don't think your teacher's music is from Fudaiji. Fudaiji used ro tsu re not fu ho u. I think your teacher may have learned from Itchoken.

The two characters making up "Myoan" mean literally "bright"+"dark". This is sometimes mispronounced "Meian" but means the same thing.
Yang corresponds to bright, and yin to dark.

Re: Intensive Shakuhachi Week in Europe

Hey all,

I am on my intense Shakuhachi week till monday afternoon, I drived by train to Kiku Day in Denmark. It was a long journay but as I can say now, still some more days to go, it is one if the greates expirences I have ever done in my live till now.

I have much lessons as I can, always twice a Day till now. As I can talk about Kiku as a Teacher she is just lovely and wonderful, her way of teaching fits me very well but I will write more about that later I think, my brain still have to work on all the impressions I get here and I think it will take some weeks to get all of them done.

All the best to you all.

Christopher

Re: Intensive Shakuhachi Week in Europe

Ohh... I didn't notice Chris had already posted something here smile

I just wanted to say that it has been an honour to have Chris here in the wild West of Denmark. He is a serious and determined learner.
I actually love the situation where students come and stay for a while. You get to know each other in a whole different way.
I have had a few, including Prem from this forum coming to stay. Love it!

I hope I didn't put too much information into Chris' brain. I am sure you can handle it though! wink
Hope to see you again!
