HI From Jemez Pueblo, New Mexico

HI
I'm Marlon Magdalena, from Jemez (HAY-mes) Pueblo, New Mexico. I've been playing the Shakuhachi since '08. I also play several other style flutes: Native American Style Flutes, Pueblo Style (aka Anasazi Flute) Flutes, and Quena. I am also a maker of flutes. Check out my website for more about me. I hope I can learn a lot from this forum.

Re: HI From Jemez Pueblo, New Mexico

Hi Aluaki and welcome,

I am in Mexico every year with a joint TAI CHI CHU'AN/SHAKUHACHI retreat, in a small village in Michoacan named Erongaricuaro (It is near Morelia, but even closer to Patzcuaro, and Lake Patzciaro). I will be there with students , this year from March 7th- March 14th, 2010. The Tai Chi teacher is Maggie Newman, and her students come from all over the USA.

I don't know if it is close to you, but I would be happy to get together.

Ronnie

Welcome, Marlon!  I have been getting very interested in the NAF and Anasazi/Pueblo flute--they have great sounds.

Re: HI From Jemez Pueblo, New Mexico

Greetings Marlon; Its real good to meet you.It sounds like you{the Jemez people] have managed to keep the old ways alive.I know it has been difficult for Traditionals all over the good old USA for a long time.Your positive energy and success at bringing flutes into the world makes me feel happy and less futile in my own struggles, living in two worlds at the same time .I started on native flutes before Shakuhachi, you will find that Shakuhachi has a strong Spirit and is a wise teacher. The structure and spirit of the natural world are contained in a single note. The mighty Oak tree grows from a tiny acorn.I just got my web-site up this week;moononwater.com,please feel free to make contact.I send my Prayers and good wishes to you and your relatives and for the continued health of your Pueblo. Re: HI From Jemez Pueblo, New Mexico

Welcome Marlon! Great to meet you. As you, I am a new member who came to the Shakuhachi in a serendipitous way via Native American Flutes and Quena. I was not acquainted with the Pueblo flute, which you make. Sorry for jumping to questions but I am  curious. Are their embouchures similar to Quena's? Having blown the Quena became a little problematic for learning the Shakuhachi embouchure at the time I  began to learn the Shakuhachi since I did not have an instructor. But you seem to have lots of experience with flutes, so this will probably not be an issue. Once again, greetings and all the best to you and the Jemez Pueblo.
