Hello, everyone knows that when you play a flute for a while that condensation builds up in the barrel. I noticed when I play my Suikyo 1.8 for a half hour or so, there is a blank spot in that condensation under the second hole from the end on the bottom side of the barrel. The entire rest of the bore is covered. Anyone know why?

Colyn,
I don't know if there is a connection but the second hole (about 36 to 37 cm. from the top on a 1.8) is often a hot spot in the bore. According to the following averaged bore profile, a pinnacle of width occurs at this point. Coincidence?

That would pretty much be the area--between 36-38 1/2 cm from the bottom contour of the utaguchi. Perhaps it has more of a drying effect due to this increased activity.

I typically have dry patches where my thumbs are holding the shakuhachi. The heat from my thumbs has warmed up those parts of the bamboo, so there is no condensation there.
