TAKE, Christopher Yohmei & Keisuke Zenyoji, video

Hi,

here is a link to a video of a rendition of TAKE a piece by Yamamoto Hozan. The players are Keisuke Zenyoji and Christopher Yohmei Blasdel.
It was taken at the main concert of Prague Shakuhachi Festival 2009.

Hi Marek, Thanks for posting this!

It's great to see two of my teachers playing together!

It's especially interesting for me to  see Zenyoji Sensei playing a different flute from the one he used to teach our lessons and perform with in Japan. It stuck out as the flute in Japan had a dark Komuso style look with a shaved root that was lacquered black. He let me examine it during a lesson once. It was a fat flute and I saw that he customized it by carving out a section for his bottom thumb. Although it looked old, it had a modern bore and a huge sound. It was quite a special flute. (Perhaps he didn't want to travel outside of Japan with it.)


Christopher, however, was playing his #1 flute - a fine Inoue Shigemi, which I also had the pleasure of examining. As I was playing it, Christopher said it took him over 20 years to begin to understand it.

Hi,

I'm glad you like it. The camera guys did a good job, I think. We will have a couple more videos ready soon. One with Christopher playing with some Czech guys who do cool ambient electronics, the Data-Live, and one with Keisuke playing one solo honkyoku.
If enough people come to Prague this year, we will have the money to make a short documentary about the ESF which, hopefully, will be broadcasted on tv (oh, that wishful thinking;)

The one here is a Senshu ( http://senshu-shakuhachi.com/ ), as played by Zenyoji sensei during the fine Prague workshops it was remarkably loud.
btw, isn't Christopher's instrument a Shiro?
This for those who are into gear...... (or stuff, sorry equipment)

Perry was the flute Zenyoji had which you describe as fat and old looking but with modern bore something that had been remade? Was it nobe?

Thanks for the correction guys. Yes, Christopher plays a Yamaguchi Shiro. (Been having a lot of brain farts lately.)

It was a an old two-piece flute that I'm almost certain had modifications. The holes were larger than on most flutes and the #1 hole was particularly large. And for such an old looking flute, I thought the bore looked really polished and clean.

He also had a custom leather carry case that was in a similar design to a binocular case - separate compartments, fold over button-down top and strap. I thought it was a very stylish way for a shakuhachi master to carry his instrument.
