Re: embouchure making

thx for your answer. I begun this post because i did not find on google or else where what i need.
My question is not "how to construct a shakuhachi" and the pb is, in a sense, not only related to it :
I know the angle I must do : 30°.
I know how to draw a 30° angle on a paper but I don't manage to transfer it to the tube form of the bambu. And i allways get a bad embouchure angle at the end.
i hope i manage to express my question right this time. smile

Brice,

The blowing end cut is often around 30 degrees but not always. It can depend on the thickness of the walls, the bore width, the angle of the top end cut as well as the type of sound one is going for.

You can make a mitre box (look up on google image) with your desired angle and cut with a hack saw. You can also make a simple jig by drawing a 30 degree angle on a thin sheet of wood. Cut it out then use it to test the angle of the blowing edge cut.

Above all, the best way to get it right is to be patient and make flute after flute. Things eventually fall into place with mindful repetition.

Good luck.

Re: embouchure making

thanks very much mujitsu, mitre box seems a good way.
what do you mean with "jig". In the dictionnary nothing matches to the subject.
And about the latency of the angle depending with bamboo characteristix, is there litterature or trix or it's just the longlong pratice ?
Brice

If you search 'utaguchi angle' in the forum and dig around, you'll find some threads about this.

Click on the 'Angle Measure' video which explains a handy tool you can make.
