Im still waiting for my bamboo to dry and i was wondering if there was a specific time that i needed to break the nodes. should the boo dry with the nodes then be broken, or broken before drying? Jus' wondering if anyone's thought about that.
My idea on this would be that if the nodes were still whole, then they would keep those areas from contracting. maybe it would even keep the rest of the boo from shriveling up too.

You should break the nodes only when fully dry (not sure why but thats what the masters says)

I've been instructed by professional makers not to attempt to straighten (with heat and bending) a bamboo culm if the nodes have been opened. You would only do the straightening after it has fully dried, as it could warp further as it dries. So this would be one reason.

Why not put it to the test, if you have a supply of bamboo ?
I don't open the nodes myself until I come to make the flute, and the culm needs to be well dried by then.
