I was wondering if people think there is a stradovarius of shakuhachi. Either maker or flute itself. It sounds like an interesting topic.

For me, the "Holy Trinity" of Shakuhachi makers would be (and in order of personal preference):

MIURA KINDO
JUDO NOTOMI
YAMAGUCHI SHIRO

...and following close by would be:
YOKOYAMA RANPO
INOUE SHIGEMI

But keep in mind that not all flutes, even by these great makers, are "Home-Runs".

And what is ultimately more important is the player.

In Japan, they say that a great calligrapher only needs one hair left on his brush to create a masterpiece.

I would imagine it is the same with violins. A great player can make almost any violin sing.I suppose the right shakuhachi and right player could be unstoppable.

Well, if you ever had the pleasure of hearing YAMAGUCHI GORO play on one of his father's flutes, then you have heard the best !

But, on the other hand, GORO Sensei would have shown brightly even on a Yuu Shakuhachi.

His was a sound that only came around once a century !

I wish Simura satosi would answer such a question. His knowledge of shakuhachi (the instrument itself) is amazing. He has had his hands on many amazing collections. I have had my hands on a few incredible collections - but I forget the names... and forget which ones I thoguht were the best. Ahhhhh.....
Here is one fine collection. They are all Edoperiod shakuhachi.

Perhaps it is not the instrument but the person that is the stradovarius. Perhaps that is the moral to this question. We all can be stradovarius.

That is an amazing collection of all Edo flutes! Almost a pitty those flutes are in that cabinet.

I think of my hocchiku as telecasters of shakuhachi.

I think the Taimu is the upright bass of shakuhachi.

I can't remember.... (I should have remembered - I know!). I think something like 2.4 if we are only counting Edo shakuhachi.

I'd take a good Toyota over a MIURA KINDO any day.

Plenty of great shakuhachi out there for under $4000 even in today's yen.
