Craaack!

Yipes. My 1.8 cracked all the way through to the bore, including the utaguchi inlay. It happened while visiting family in Virginia whose house is heated primarily by a woodstove (very dry air). I don’t normally travel with my 1.8, but this trip I did....I had it wrapped in plastic, but not sealed; I had taken it from my car, knowing it would be too cold overnight. In the middle of the night I heard this sharp sound, as if something had had fallen from a shelf, or onto a wooden table top. I sat up and looked around, but then dismissed it, rolled over and went back to sleep. The next morning when I unwrapped the flute it was not a pretty sight. I feel like I've lost a good friend.

I believe most every maker has plenty of success stories with this type of crack. My advice would be to send it to your nearest maker for a full recovery!

Not to worry. big_smile

Re: Craaack!

Ouch. Send it to one of our wizards on the forum to get it fixed.

Re: Craaack!

Oww, that looks painful!

Quick, pack it up and send it to the shakuhachi hospital...Perry Yung's workshop immediately comes to mind....

Re: Craaack!

Here's one from Perry's blog that he successfully repaired. You can read about it here:

Re: Craaack!

I had a similar crack (though not as serious) and I sent it back to my teacher, who in turn sent it back to the maker who repaired it and bound it.

Don't give up hope! Send it to someone on here (like Perry, lovely guy) and it'll be good to go in no time.

Re: Craaack!

Thanks for the encouragement. And I apologize for posting such a graphic violent photo, I realize it hurts!

I'm in touch with Perry now who thinks he can fix it! Will let you know the outcome. I thought for sure it was a lost cause. I had sealed it in a bag with damp cloth for a few days; the crack closed, mostly...but then mold started showing in a few spots. When I took it out, the crack opened again, even though in a humidified room. Let's see what Perry can do.

How do you keep mold from forming on a flute when it's sealed in plastic with moisture?
