where to attach microphone (for live performance)

Hi Guys,

I went to club to see a friend sing (I had my shakuhachi and my silver flute with me,as always;-)
She called me for a solo..it was the perfect shakuhachi song. Beautifull melody, D minor, groove band.
I went up, beggin to play,...I couldn`t hear nothing. I was playing close to the mic,far , i tryed them all. I felt so bad..That sound system was a nightmare.
so I pick up my silver flute, that thing has high frequences so i could hear my self. That saved me..

what do you guys recomend for live performance, with a laud band? So far I have used shakuhachi for acustic live performace, piano guitar, and in studio(where there is a lot to choice)
Its just plain loud funk, world music, in a club.
Where to place the mic?stand up mic. What kind?
I have a Countryman mic for the flute, and a audio technika (sax pic-up).
Where to attach them? Near to the mouth? Or in the end of the flute?
looking forward for your wisdom.
Geni

Re: where to attach microphone (for live performance)

Coincidentally I spoke with James Nyoraku Schlefer about this yesterday and he said he mounted his Countryman mic on some headphones. He places the mic at nose level and aims it down towards the sound.

I just stand in front of a mic (such as Shure SM 58) and blow when I play rock. You must be careful not to have wind ricocheting off the mic itself because that cuts out the sound which can be embarassing I assure you.

Re: where to attach microphone (for live performance)

I have never gotten the hang of using the Countryman or other clip-on instrument mics effectively with shakuhachi. For live I like playing into a SM57 positioned a third of the way up the flute about a foot out. But the headphone mounting is a good idea, as it keeps the mic out of the direct stream of air. Have to try that some time.

A solution for the air stream problem is to place the mic a little off to the side. It doesnt make a big difference to the sound.

Re: where to attach microphone (for live performance)

my experiment with the mic went well today.

I placed at a nose level (some where near to nose;-) and it sound it cool.
the only problem is that my Countryman mic is made for to be attached to the flute.
I holded with one hand, and play with the other. It sound beautifull.

there is the Countryman headset, but thats cuple of hundrets more (the quality of the mic is the same).
So, tomorow I going to Radio Shack , find some headphones,

peace-Geni.

Re: where to attach microphone (for live performance)

I just a bought a Contryman Earset microphone.

Its my best investment in music equipment.
The quality is great.
I can switch flutes (shakuhachi/flute) without problem.
I got one with in skin color , so people will not notice.
