Looking for black monofilament

I've just bought some really nice clear monofilament line to bind my flutes. Looks nice.
But I still really like the look of black bindings. I might try to lacquer the clear binding with some pigmentet lacquer.

Butdoes anyone of you know if there is such a thing as black monofilament. If there is, where can I get it?

Re: Looking for black monofilament

It has been mentioned before, but PowerPro binding followed by cyanoacrylate or polyurethane gives a nori green (almost black) very low-profile binding.

The binding and coating are both so cheap, it's worth a try on scrap bamboo to see if you like the effect.    (more here)

I just found a photo that shows how this can turn out.  (Sorry, it's a very dark photo but it's all I could find.)  The green is not quite black, but you can see how low profile this is but also how much you have to wind to cover area.  For scale, those bindings were 18 windings each on a 47 mm diameter end.

Re: Looking for black monofilament

Looks great. I'm thinking of getting polyurethane lacquer to finish the bore also. I wonder if it will do a good job.
Still though.. it would be great to find a normal .38 or .25 mm monofilament line that comes in plain black. I like the mono-look.

What kind of polyuraethane did you use? Have you tried it in the bore?

This stuff isn’t mono but it comes in a dozen colors and assorted sizes, has low creep and high strength.

Re: Looking for black monofilament

Stores that sell fishing gear or beading supplies usually carry the black monofilament.

Is illusion cord (bead cord) strong enough? It's .25 mm thick.

Re: Looking for black monofilament

I found it now!

It's called "Cortland Musky Mono". Smooth black monofilament line ranging from 17lbs to 30lbs.
Only problem now is to find some place that will ship to Sweden without charging $500 for shipping.
One roll of 300 yards is only 8 bucks....

Toffe, you may want to ask "Shakuhachi Jon" what he uses.  It may be what you're looking for.  Blog here:  http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fusea … =188883220

He's showing an attractive black binding on his flutes:
