I'm planning to take a lesson in 2007 and it will require travel. I live in an area where there are no teachers within a 5-hour drive radius, if that.
What proficiencies do instructors recommend students have for "intermediate" instruction? I don't want to waste the instructors time or mine.
Do teachers typically allow the session to be videotaped or at least the audio recorded?
How long should I book the session for, 1-2 hours?
Any information that can offered to better prepare me for a productive lesson would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Do you know who your teacher will be?
Why not ask them?

edosan,
1.) I have no idea who the teacher will be. So far, it looks like I'll have to travel to NYC. I hope not, but time will tell.
2.) I am asking, via the Forum. It's my primary contact to those qualified to teach and provide counsel.
Thanks for your comments.

Dale Olsen, a professor of ethnomusicology is in Tallahassee and thus the closest teacher to you in Jacksonville. He was my first teacher, back when i was a grad student at FSU.
if you are going to travel, you should plan on taking numerous lessons in the time you are in the town with the teacher. Most should allow videotaping and recording of lessons. Best to simply make inquiries of the teacher that interests you

I found his address and sent him an email. He's just 3-hours away!
Thank you.

George,
Here's the FSU site and his email. He'll probably be surprised to start hearing from Florida Shakuhachi players.
