"Leaf Music"

"...(Kodo) Sawaki, often referred to as "Homeless Kudos" because
of his lifestyle, was possibly the biggest advocate of zazen in the last century.
Sodo Yokoyama was a student of his and a modern day Ryokan who spent his
days in a public park sitting zazen, writing poems and playing music on leaves..."

Re: "Leaf Music"

I once saw a photo of Sawaki playing a leaf between his thumbs. It brought back the memory of the leaf kazoo back in grade school. Fascinating, the desire to exhale a sound and sometimes ornament it. Ascetically, was Sawaki accentuating "the self" by blowing the leaf?

Nice little article and book reference. Thanks, Harry

Re: "Leaf Music"

There was a technique for playing dance music melody here in Ireland using just an ivy leaf, its remembered in a tune title ("The Ivy Leaf"... funnily enough), but I've never seen it done.

Harry.
