Microphone Advice Needed

I've been trying to record my shakuhachi playing.

I’m using a Creative Lab’s, E-MU 0404 PCI digital Audio system,

http://images.creative.com/iss/images/inline/products/E-MU0404PCI/feature_1.jpg

I also have an internal sound card that came with my computer. I have a small microphone that normally would be used for talking through the computer.  If I use the internal sound card I can use an un-amplified mic. If I use the E-MU 0404, I need an amplified mic.

I’ve started pricing microphones and amps! WOW… They are expensive. I’m just looking to record my shakuhachi playing for my own use. Any recommendations on some kind of mic/amp combo I can get for under a $100 USD?

Re: Microphone Advice Needed

I'd recomment looking at the new USB mics. The Samson is, I believe, under $100.

Good luck.

Re: Microphone Advice Needed

The USB mics are fine, but they won't take advantage of your E-mu interface inputs, which are coaxial analog.

I'd consider getting an Audio-Technia condenser mic. A-T makes fancy expensive mics, but they also make some very
affordable condenser mics, too. For example:

http://www.zzounds.com/item--AUTPRO24 --this one is a small stereo mic that is powered either by its own on-board battery or
                                                                                by phantom power.

     http://www.zzounds.com/item--AUTPRO37--this one requires phantom power*.

http://www.zzounds.com/item--AUTAT2020--this is a monaural studio mic, requires phantom power. A $200 mic for 100 bucks.

Look around on these pages (Zzounds) or Google Audio Technia mics.

eB

*Phantom power is supplied by most mic preamps, which are a good thing to have. ART makes some very good, reasonably priced ones.

Here're a couple:

http://www.zzounds.com/item--ARTV3

http://www.zzounds.com/item--ART127

Both are quite inexpensive, both supply phantom power, both are tube type preamps, which produces a warm sound.

[Disclaimer: eB is not affiliated with either Zzounds, Audio-Technia or ART; he has just used products from these companies
for years with good results...]

Re: Microphone Advice Needed

You could always go for a device like the M-Audio Fast Track. it's USB, has XLR in, very simple, inexpensive system. You can get them for under $100, and then you can use a Sure SM-57 or whatever works for you. I personally do not like using an amp to go into 1/4" jacks, but that's me.

I have had some excellent results from a company called XML. They're Russian, and make great mics, especially for the price. Don't let the price fool you.

This package seems pretty interesting. Decent case, too.

I know it's starting to bust your budget. Did you get your soundcard recently?
