On the capriciousness of flute making...

One cannot even approximately calculate the length of a flute tube which will sound a given note;
one cannot by theoretical calculation locate any finger hole on a flute tube which will produce a given tone.

Interesting guy.  Flute fanatic, scientist, etc.  Short bio.

Mostly western flutes in his collection of 1,700 but a few shakuhachi and more unusual Japanese flutes if you go here and enter japanese.  I don't know if his Japanese flutes are remarkable compared to specialized collections today but I'm sure at the time he was a rare Westerner to be interested in this stuff.  The digitized photos have a good level of detail.
