Naming the flutes you make?

I've noticed that many old and expensive flutes from Japan tend to have names. On the other hand, almost none of the western makers today seem to name the flutes they sell. One exception I've seen is Alcvin Ramos who apparently names all of his flutes that end up for sale (I'd love to try one some day!). I realise that it might get hard to name every single flute if you make several each week, even if simply because it's hard to think of names for every flute if you want them to actually signify something. Yet, I find it rather interesting to know that particular flute is called so and so because it has some special characteristics or it was made of a piece of bamboo with a special history.

What do you think about the topic? Do you think that naming flutes is a waste of time? For the makers on this board, is there a specific reason why you do/don't name your flutes or have you simply never thought about the issue? Finally, Alcvin, if you happen to read this and have a bit of time to spare, I would love to hear how you come up with the names for your flutes.

Re: Naming the flutes you make?

Worthwhile topic, I have named a few of my flutes, but not many.
The second flute I ever made is called "number two" and I still play it a lot. then there is "Scarface" because two narrow strips of bamboo skin came off between holes one and two. The shorter 1.4 that loves celtic tunes I called "little ripper", and recently a lovely 1.8 with an interesting white line between two lower nodes I call "cheeky one-liner".

Out of about 150 flutes these are the only ones that have inspired names, I look forward to the 2.8 or so that inspires a name like "belch".
